Do You Like Your Name?

I've been doing a lot of thinking recently.  Thinking and planning and sorting and gardening.  I found this huge mushroom under the leaf/compost pile that I have been adding to all year.  We no longer pay for the council green waste collection - why pay to give away our own plant waste when we can put it back to the earth?

The weeks roll over one week into the next and yet I feel stuck with this cycle of trying to get rid of things I have accumulated over the years.  It is taking longer than I envisaged.

In a reflective mood I started to think about my name - Simone.  It is pronounced Sim-on and yet for most of my life people refer to me as Sim-own.  Even when I have corrected people they have continued to call me Sim-own.  My family refer to me as Simbo, Simmy, Sim-on-ee,  my husband calls me Sir- mon and my Great Nan used to call me Sommy!!!

I wonder if my life would have been any different if I had been given another name.  I think my name is ugly and it means snub-nosed and I do have a snub nose!  I don't even have a middle name that I can use instead.

Do you like your name?  Do you think your name has had a negative or positive impact on your life or not made any difference at all?

  1. Well I must admit I would have called you Sim-own if we had met but now I know differently.
As for my name, I don't mind it, there aren't really too many of us about!! :)

    1. If I met you Vivienne and said my name I know you would say it as I say it. My name is the french pronunciation of Simone. I think your name is beautiful! x

  2. I'll let you into a secret here, my real name is Brenda and I hate it, that's why I'm Briony. My maiden name was Brown so you can guess that with a name like Brenda Brown it was horrible. Apparently it means a sword so it gets no better, lol
I don't think many people like their name. My Daughter is Penny and she hates it.

    1. I like Briony, Brenda and Penny! A sword is better than mine which is snub nose!!! I think names are fascinating. One of my Nans were christened Elizabeth Kate Marion but she was known as Sybil! x

  3. As I understood it Simone is a biblical name and originates from the Hebrew meaning God has Heard, One who Hears, One who listens and is popular in Hindu religion and was adopted by the French, German and English. It is also said to originate from the ancient Greek and it is that translation that means snub nose. The Hebrew meaning is so much nicer and I think it is a rather beautiful name and I would embrace it.
My name is the plain version of Vivien but most people use the french spelling Vivienne which I think is much nicer and I have even thought of adopting it and never correct people if they use the French spelling! Growing up I felt singled out as in a school of 400 I was the only Vivien and I longed to be a more popular Susan or a Linda like my friends. Now I rather like being different as I have also grown to like my ginger hair over the years.
I confess I always refer to you as Sim-own but of course I know differently now.xx

    1. I like the variations in meaning of my name Vivien. Thank you for the information. My name (the Sim-own version) is quite well known now but I was the only Simone at school. French names were popular when I was born (1963) and my sister has the rather more prettier name of Michele Louise. I was an introverted child and it was quite upsetting when my name was continually pronounced wrongly despite telling people how it should sound. It made me feel that my voice wasn't heard. I've made up for it since though! I think your name is beautiful and it sounds the same as Vivienne even if it is spelt differently. x

  4. I love your name Simone. I think it is beautiful and very feminine. I don't love my name, but I have never minded it because I don't run into very many others with my name. I am named after my great aunt and I like having a family name. I don't think my name has had any impact on my life one way or another. Something I think is interesting is how some people go by their middle names. Quite a few people in my family have done that including one of my sons. In my son's case as he grew his middle name seemed to suit him better than his first name.

    1. Bonnie is a great name - it means pretty, attractive and beautiful! It is easy to pronounce too! I don't have a middle name. Isn't it funny how some people suit certain names as in the case with your son? x

  5. Simone is a pretty name, very French, very chic I always think. I think many people don't like their names. Mine is Rosalyn. When I was born my father wanted to call me Lynette or Linda but Mum wasn't keen. So they called me after my Granny Rosa and put on the Lyn. When my father died and Mum married again my step family didn't like Rosalyn so all called me Lyn for short. I didn't really want to ne Lyn but I was too polite to object as a small child. Friends call me Ros or Rosie. When I write Christmas cards I have to remember who knows me as Rosalyn, Ros, Rosie or Lyn. All very confusing:)

    1. It is interesting that your name is Rosalyn Rosie! I like both names. It was rude of your step family not to have addressed you by your birth name. I can imagine the difficulty in trying to remember who knows you by what name when writing out your Christmas cards! x

  6. Goodness I have just read Rosie's comment! I don't mind my name, my mum changed the more common spelling of Linda to Lynda but most people call me Lyn. I like Simone, yes in my head I say Sim-own too...if I ever have the privilege to meet you I hope I say Sim-on to you xxxx

    1. I like Lyn as in short for Lynda. Most people incorrectly pronounce my name. I don't mind too much when they get it wrong but it annoys me when they continue to say it wrongly when I have told them the way I want to be addressed! I hope you are well Lyn. Enjoy your break from school coming up! x
