In the Kitchen

I have enjoyed being in isolation (due to Covid 19 virus outbreak) during this first week because it has focused my mind.  A lot of my time has been spent in the kitchen. The challenging aspect is to keep coming up with food from the ingredients I already have.  I have made Greek yogurt, mustard mayonnaise from scratch and then I made a coleslaw using up a light spring cabbage, carrots and red onion to which I added my mayo!  I am going to have to find all kinds of creative ways to use up supplies before venturing to the shops.  Today I put together a vegetable soup using up odds and ends from the fridge with some dried red lentils.

There is no time for me to be bored.  I actually think I am on auto pilot and I have been more productive than ever.   I wake up early and am tired by bedtime.  I have been occasionally working out with weights with my son's instruction and have built up some impressive muscles!  By the time all this is over I will emerge from the house like a butterfly free from its cocoon showing off a new and improved version of myself.  I am also getting delusional with this confinement!

Leave a comment here to let me know how you are doing.

  1. Good for you Simone! :)
We're ok here with lots to do, my only problem is not being able to see my granddaughters, although we do video call but its not the same as giving them a cuddle.

  3. You have a beautiful kitchen! It sounds like you are a very good cook and I admire that. I am not the best and not too good at putting things together without a recipe.

I have no problem with boredom under any circumstance as I can always come up with something I need or want to get done. As Briony said the days feel like Sundays and I like that. Take care Simone.

    1. Hi Bonnie. My kitchen is really tiny! I think cooking is just about having confidence. If something doesn't work out then try it again making some changes. I am glad that you always have something to do and that you like the days feeling like Sundays! Be well.

  5. I don't mind it although all the things we'd planned for this year have had to be abandoned as they involved the outside world. Yesterday I walked up and down the side garden about 40 times.I'm glad we no longer have our much missed cats as I would worry about getting them food as we manage by using the local shop and are avoiding supermarkets. Food for the garden birds has been ordered on line. You have a lovely, tidy kitchen Simone which must invite you to work and cook in it. I look forward to seeing more of your creations from there. Take care:)

    1. Glad you are well Rosie. I was planning on having a holiday this year as my last was was over 10 years ago! Never mind, not much I can do about it now. I am beginning to worry about keeping Gizmo fed and well. His appetite has increased so much lately just as I am down to his last bag of food. My kitchen is tidy at the moment Rosie but incredibly small! I hope you have a good week ahead. x

  6. being on the rota to go into school I can at least have some interaction with others, I spent a good half an hour chatting to a four year old as we painted a rainbow on acetate with glass paints (to put up on the window at school) it has been fun having the time to do this, but I have also been busy in the kitchen store cupboard soup like you and cakes mainly! I have done yoga and some stitching too! I might even get some of my famous unfinished projects completed! xx

    1. So nice to hear from you Lyn! I bet the little four year old loved you helping to paint a rainbow. I really fancy cake right now and may have to delve deep into the kitchen drawers and see what I can come up with! I have so many craft projects to do but somehow keep focusing on food just now! Keep well. x

  7. Hello Simone,

I cook every meal myself. I know some people are finding it hard what to cook. I think if you have a good pantry that is well stocked and a few veg growing you will be OK. I have enjoyed planting vegie seeds for people who haven't got them. A real shortage, who knew that so many people would want to be gardeners.
    Stay safe.
    Happy days.
    Bev.

    1. Hi Bev, I cook for myself too but unfortunately the pantry is getting depleted and I can't get many of the staples required to cook from scratch with! I've started off veg seeds but they won't be ready until late summer/autumn. Hope you are keeping well. x

  8. I have a tiny kitchen too, Simone and I wish I had cupboards or, rather deep drawers, to store everything that I have. Quite a bit of my stock is in a cupboard in the living room.

As for the isolating, I am usually at home alone anyway so nothing has changed for me, other than being allowed to go to the shops. Still, I have an Ocado delivery every now and then so I shall not starve.
