This was our street's first party on Sunday. I think arrangements are already being made for the second! The purpose of the party was to get to know the people who live in the street. There was a couple I had never seen before and they live two doors away and they had lived their for two years!
Everyone made such an effort to ensure that the event was a success. Music was played, giant Jenga and games for the children, Sangria and plenty of drinks for all, food in abundance and too many beautifully decorated cakes to count!
Whilst the adults chatted and ate delicious home made food, the children played in driveways and cycled and played in the roads for the first time ever as the road was closed to traffic.
Heavy rain was forecast but even the sun came out to play! It was such a civilised event and there wasn't any arguments or animosity. Everybody helped to tidy up and by 10.00pm you wouldn't even know such an event had taken place.
We invited the local police to attend in case we had unwelcome gatecrashers but our fears were unfounded. I don't think they wanted to leave, but as they were tucking into second helpings of chocolate cake a helicopter hovered overhead. Looking skyward they gathered their apparel and made a hasty retreat!

ReplyDeleteHi Simone! How nice is this?! I see such gatherings like this around here once in a great while, but I think more streets and neighborhoods should do things like this! More often than not, people are more than willing to chip in to make the event a success!.. It looks like you all had a great time, and my goodness all that cake sounded good! ~tina

What a fantastic idea .... that looks such a good way to get to know your neighbours. We often have gatherings and a bonfire in the field behind our house ... but it's usually just the people we know very well already.

I love the houses in your street! What a great effort from everyone to make the party such fun and a success. I can see this sort of gathering really taking off with the current interest in nostalgia, wartime spirit in these trying times and all that. I really like the idea of picked garden flowers in the tins and jars to use as a centrepiece. I hope that was only squash the Community Support Officer was drinking! x

It looks like such a lot of fun, getting to know people who live just a few doors down - I have neighbours 3 doors away who hardly speak and feel its such a shame that some folks aren't so friendly. This seems like a great way to break some ice and make new friends and reminds me of scenes following the end of the war! Thank you so much for sharing your heartwarming story.

Oooh Simone, what a lovely day you must have had! We used to do a similar thing (but going round each others' houses) in our old village but now we've moved we don't even have any neighbours next door as the house is being renovated :o(
