Blogging Observations

I have been blogging for two and a half years now. I have witnessed many changes in the blogging World since I started out. Here are some of my observations.

Many of the blogs I used to enjoy packed up just as I was starting out.

It used to be fun to receive awards from fellow bloggers but became tiresome when you felt obligated to respond.

People like to read upbeat posts.

You are more likely to receive comments when you post about a pet.

You are more likely to receive comments when doing a giveaway.

You are likely to be taken off peoples blog rolls and replaced with new upcoming blogs.

It is hard to come up with original material.

There are some lovely genuine people.

Some people are not what they seem.

Some people are honest and generous in their giveaways.

Some people never send out the giveaways.

A photo is worth a thousand words.

Comments can be uplifting and inspiring.

It is not a good idea to post personal details.

It is not a good idea to criticise other peoples blogs.

There is an unwritten code of conduct.

For some people blogging is a popularity contest.

When a valued blogger stops blogging it hurts.

Most people appreciate comments.

Most people get bloggers block.

Blogging is addictive.

  1. VERY interesting thoughts, Simone! I have to agree.. While my giveaways tend not to be nearly as big as some others we see around Blogland, I DO tend to get the most comments on such occasions! What's more, I don't know much about this "unwritten code of conduct", probably because I don't care, and never even noticed!!.. Still, I'll say THIS for most bloggers... They DO step up and share a kind word when you need it the most, or when I speak most deeply from the heart!.. and that is what I love most about blogging!... Have a great day, and a wonderful weekend! ((hugs)) ~tina

  5. I agree with all your points - very well observed and expressed.

Personally I have found that blogging has helped me to be more observant and thoughtful of things around me. As you say, because people like to read upbeat posts, I try to post in a positive light and this in turn is making me feel happier too.

  7. Very observant Simone!
I agree that some comments can be uplifting ... I had amazing comments when I was going through my treatment. They really cheered me up. Everybody gets bloggers block at some time. Love Kathy xxx

  8. Oh I know I haven't posted my cards! They reproach me from the kitchen dresser every time I pass- it's that disastrous train of logic that says best to post Kilkenny cards when posting sun's thank you note to Tracing Rainbows that he hasn't been made to sit down and actually write yet because there's always so much homework and I still haven't found witty, erudite, individualised quotes to put inside the cards and next rule of blogging is keep your comments light and short!

  9. What a great post!
I think is one of those posts that everyone should read!
I agree with all of your observations!
Although the one that I agree the most... is the competitive side of blogging!
Hence the reason why I decided not to have a followers link!
Also I find it very upsetting when one of your followers decide not to follow you anymore!
I keep worrying that I might have said something that I shouldn`t have!
5* FOR SUCH AN AMAZING POST!

  10. I'm glad you've kept at it with your blogging,Simone ! It's been nice to 'meet' you and even though I might not comment frequently (I've had to cut back drastically on blogging time), I do read and enjoy your blog very much.
I agree with Puppet Lady too..! ;-)

  12. Well said Simone!

Cats in particular seem to bring the comments rolling in .... and the addiction of blogging was something I discovered very early on!!:0)

  13. Very thoughtful and observant post, Simone - I've always loved reading your posts and look forward to your comments on mine. Bloggers block is hitting me more and more at the moment - after 5 years of blogging I sometimes feel I'm just repeating what I've done before:)

  14. This is one of my favourite posts I've read in a long time. And absolutely true.

    The giveaways one is hilarious.

And I'll always throw in a pet one if I'm feeling unloved.

I don't know that it's so mcuh that people don't like reading posts that aren't upbeat, but more that it's so difficult to know how to comment when someone writes something difficult or sad. It's so easy to end up sounding trite when you don't mean to.

  15. As a newbie I loved reading that post, has anyone thought to write the unwritten bloggers code of conduct as I am worried I have probably done something wrong now :-)

  16. I also find that I have the most amazing fabulous wonderful ideas to blog about when I am no were near a computer, then forget them instantly once I am near a computer...
It is an insight into the human psychy (v bad spelling sorry) I am surprised there have been no social studies on blogs yet - well, there probably has been, I just haven't seen them!

  17. I've been thinking most of what you've been thinking for some time now. I'm at a disadvantage with followers as I don't sew, knit or crochet, and I haven't got a pet. I do have other things going for me though! x

  18. Simone, all too true!
I have to say I love blogging but sometimes feel the pressure to find something happy to talk about. One thing that is good is it makes me want to keep creating, and that can't be a bad thing.

  23. a great post simone...i was smiling and nodding my head all the way through. good comments too.
i'm just wondering about those unwritten rules? knowing me i've probably unwittingly broken most of them. i think leaving ones blog for months on end like i have done (twice) is not a good move, but tis sadly necessary in my case. i do miss blogging and especialy miss all the lovely people such as your good self. hope i make it back again someday. meanwhile i should maybe move to blogger, it seems mad to have an account i have to pay for just sitting there (esp. as my staits are so dire at the mo).
anyway, as i said in my comment above, i do still visit fom time to time, your blog is def. one of my faves. i'm a big fan of your artwork too.

    lots of love
