Finishing and Starting

I have finally finished making my fairy cards so it is time to move onto something else. After seeing the pictures of hens made by potato printing in the March issue of  Country Living magazine, I was inspired to have a go myself.

I cut a potato in half and cut a crescent shape out of it.  I applied acrylic paint onto the potato in the colours of a chickens plumage and then pressed gently down onto paper.

I produced these images after a couple of attempts,  OK, they are not fantastic pieces of art and have an amateurish cartoon-like quality about them, but the good thing is I know I can do better!!!

I need to refine the potato shape and play about with the colours too.  Why not have a go?  It is great fun and you don't need to be an artist to do it!

  1. Oh my goodness they're amazing! Hmmm, you might not need to be an artist but I have a feeling that it would take more than a couple of attempts to come up with something like you have!

  2. Oh don't refine them I love them exactly as they are - that childlike naiive quality is perfect. You could use them for Easter cards too perhaps?

  5. Your chickens are wonderful just the way they are - Jane is right you could use them for Easter cards. I see you've been reading Somerset Maugham's Liza of Lambeth - I read it a few years ago and enjoyed it likewise 'The Moon and Sixpence'. I haven't tackled 'Of Human Bondage' yet!:)

  11. The little fairy cards are very sweet, and I love how you've added the rows of buttons to each one. And the potato print chicken is wonderful! I love the way it makes such a fantastic edge round the shape. It reminds me of the sponge ware designs on ceramics. Helen x

  14. They are brilliant! I had been thinking about having a go, and I may still, but me and paint do horrible things together!

  15. The humble potato, who would have thought? I especially like the last one you've included, the lightness of your pen and ink additions give it such character. I'd forgotten how much I used to enjoy potato prints... thanks for reminding me, Simone.
