A Garden View No.1

I am beginning to use this blog as an online diary now as much as trying to provide interesting posts for readers.  The photo above shows part of my back garden.  It has changed considerably over the years with the addition of the now redundant hen house and run, and the subtraction of a large wooden arbour at the back of the garden that succumbed to woodworm and a battering by bad weather over the last few years.  The garden used to be in a dark shadow until a few years back when the neighbours decided to chop down a gigantic eucalyptus tree.  It was a beautiful tree but totally in the wrong place for a small residential garden.

On the far left of the picture, at the back is a skeleton of a tree that I believe was a casualty of the frosts.  It provides the ideal climbing frame for the pink clematis that you can see at the top.  It wasn't planned for the clematis to go there but was a 'happy accident'.  Either side of the hen house are two privet bushes.  The idea is to sculpt them into neat topiary shapes but that is another thing on my 'to do' list.

The garden is very shrubby and it takes a lot of time to prune the shrubs and prevent them encroaching on the grass.  I try to keep it tidy and yet wildlife friendly.  There are plenty of wild areas around the edges!  I have started to get rid of some of the borage that has seeded all around the garden but left enough to provide food for the bees.

I hope you have enjoyed popping in to my garden space.  It has been a delight to have you over!

  1. Your garden looks lovely Simone, a really calming space. I love that the clematis has brought life to the dead tree.

  2. Your garden looks really lovely, Simone...it has been a pleasure visiting your today! I love the idea of having topiary trees either side of the hen house, I really like features like that in a garden among the trees and shrubs. And I love the clematis climbing up high there! What a peaceful place you have created.
Enjoy your week, hope it's full of sunny days!

  3. What a lovely garden, Simone. We too have a clematis montana which grows up to the top of a tree and looks quite spectacular. The sparrows are nesting in it this year:)

    1. Hi Toffeeapple, yes I do miss my hens but I don't miss the worry and concern they caused me. I may keep them again one day. Never say never!!!

  11. Your garden looks very tranquil Simone. I guess it must be a lot of work to keep it in good shape but also such a pleasure to sit outside and take it all in weather permitting of course.
