Seasonal Sadness

As the sun goes down on the first day of September I am in a reflective mood.  I am not alone, but I guess I am in the minority of people who dislike summer time.  For me the summer is full of promise but fails to deliver.  There is always a big build up to summer; hopes of holiday's, Barbeque's, days at the beach, picnics etc.  For me none of this materialises and it is just like any other time of year apart from being hot and sticky with sleepless nights and an ongoing lethargy.

Thank goodness for the onset of autumn.  Autumn doesn't show off.  Autumn is mellow and beautiful.  The sun is soft and not glaringly obtuse bleaching everything in sight like the summer sun does.  So, farewell to the summer season and hello to my familiar friend the autumn.  You are most welcome.

  1. You won't be hoping for an Indian summer in September like me then?! Glad you are happy to have the shorter days and the cooler weather - every season has its charms and autumn is also often lovely of course. I think it is the grey days that I don't care for so any season is fine with me as long as it doesn't entail weeks of grey!

  2. Well as you know Simone, I love summertime, it's not that I don't like autumn, I love the colours but I really don't like the shorter days!

  3. I'm always sad when summer goes - more so as I get older. I do like autumn though - for the richness and colour - just not the dark nights. My worst months are November, January and February as they can be dreadfully dull and grey. When we were out today I noticed many of the trees are already turning russet and gold - autumn is so early this year:)

  4. Simone,
We're most definitely seeing signs of autumn here in America's heartland. She brings many delights unique to her season, and I'm reminded by her arrival that I am a 4 seasons gal at heart. I love them all in their ways and take comfort in knowing that each will arrive in turn, bringing their best and worst. And if it seems there's too much of the worst, I try to relax knowing it won't last forever.
Enjoy autumn and her special comforts. May she be gentle and benevolent.

  5. I do love summer, but I can see what you mean; it does have its down sides. I just like to focus on my favorite bits of it and ignore the rest (ugh, the BUGS here were probably the worst part about our summer!).

Anyway, although I was at first reluctant to step into September, I am hopeful for a beautiful month. For me, it's usually autumn that fails to deliver on its promises of beauty. Ohio seemed to always be so rainy and grey. I'm hoping it will be different here!

Here's to a gorgeous, slow autumn for us both!

  6. Simone, you are not alone!! Summer is beautiful, summer is lovely, but it is definitely not my favorite season. I suffer in the heat and have to keep out of the sun, so I spend most of it inside, in air conditioning. I, too, love Autumn, and welcome it with open arms!xx
