I really want to make cards.........

......but end up making gift tags instead! Over the years I have bought a vast quantity of papers, cardstock and embellishments with the view to making my own cards. I have made a few cards before but have always been disappointed with the quality of the cardstock. If I buy pre-scored cardstock it has to have a perfect fold in the middle or else I can't use it! It also has to be a thick and heavy quality paper like water colour paper. My reasoning is that if I am going to put time and effort into making a card then I want to use the best material available.

I have tried folding my own cardstock and even with the paper trimmer, guillotines and card folding devices I still am not satisfied with how the card folds and looks. Has any one else out there had these problems with making cards? I am talking about rectangle/square cards as I guess with a shaped card it wouldn't be such a problem. (I would still get annoyed about the crease though.)

Then there is the problem of whether or not to put an insert into the card or to hand stamp a message - decisions, decisions...........

I think for the time being I am better off making tags. You know where you are with a tag. No folding, no inserts.

  1. those elephant tags are fantastic!!! I know what you mean about wanting things to be just right - but I tend to end up making things in such a rush that I HAVE to compromise!

  2. Your tags are lovely!

It drives me mad when I spend good money on prefolded cards and they aren't perfectly lined up - it's all that origami I did when I was little I expect!

I know what you mean about cards..the last lot I ordered were flimsy, no where near as good as previous batch, just can't remember where I got the good ones! Gx

  4. You're an expert at tags Simone, I would stick to those. I am with you on the fold, I am very fussy, and if something doesn't look more or less perfect, then I don't buy it. You have a good eye for detail, keep up the good work. x

  8. Hi Simone! What fabulous tags! There's no need to make cards when you already have something so wonderful. :)

I know what you mean about the cards. Sometimes the cards I get don't have the edge line up. Then I usually put the longer edge in the front so at least it doesn't show from that side! But do you have an Archiver's store near where you live? They sell a card scorer, which I have used at their store but haven't bought (yet). I was very impressed because it turned out the way pre-scored cards do, but you can line it up how YOU want it, so it can be centered. Might be worth a try if you decide you want to venture into cards again.

  11. Last Christmas, I bought what I thought were folded cards only to find they were really postcards - I made them into my Christmas cards anyway and they looked great and no folding. Less paper to throw away too!
Your gift tags are just gorgeous.

  12. Ahh a girl after my own heart, I love paper so much. The only way I find I get a good fold is to run the blunt edge of a knife along the crease line a couple of times and then fold firmly. I then run the edge of my blunt knife across the fold to really press it. Hope that helps. Love the tags too.
