Outstared by the Fox

Something caught my eye as I looked out of the conservatory window.  There was a fox sitting next to the strawberry patch.  On seeing my movement it vanished in the blink of an eye.  I then noticed another fox on the other side - curled up tightly in a ball.  I tapped the window and it sleepily lifted its head.  We looked into each others eyes for a time and then aware of possible danger it took to its heels and run into the shrubs for cover.

I have a love/hate relationship with foxes ever since one mauled and killed my hen Peppercorn.  For just a brief moment today I gave this one the benefit of the doubt.

  1. What a handsome face he has. Years ago I lived in a block of flats and we had a family of foxes live near by. I took cooked sausages out for them once and one of the cubs took it from my hand.

  3. I always think it's a privilege to get this close to nature. I love foxes and I know some of things they do aren't very nice but I suppose they have to survive. I'm totally against fox hunting, it's cruel and barbaric, so I'm always on the side of the fox.
He does look a handsome boy!

  6. I can understand your love/hate relationship with the visiting foxes as they do sometimes kill even though they don't need the food but they are such beautiful creatures aren't they? I love to see them in our garden:)

  7. Your chicken house looks very much like the bungalow we bought for our senior hens last season. We needed a space for them to be separate from the new flock until such time as we could let them mingle. It worked perfectly well and has spent the winter in our pole barn out of the elements. This spring we plan to give it a thorough drenching with preservative so we can use it again when needed.
Have only seen a fox here once though there are several neighbor dogs that are allowed to roam and the coyote population has soared. It's the raccoons that get to most chickens in our area.
Your garden already looks like spring. Our summer birds are back and there are signs of bud break, but it's early days yet.
    Happy week, Simone.

  9. Such a gorgeous photo...magazine worthy, really. I love foxes. I know they are often naughty, but that is how they are wired by Mother Nature.
