Daily Bread

I got off to a good start with my list of intentions for 2014 by baking a loaf of bread.  It is not a great loaf by any means of the imagination.  Firstly it got stuck in the tin and I tried to pull it out but it wouldn't budge, then I got a knife and impatiently hacked around the edge slicing through the loaf.  I am showing you the better side!  Not too sure on the salt water crust either until I put it to the taste test.

I have ordered my dried herbs to put into the sleep pillows that I propose to make.  It was quite an expensive outlay so I think I will be growing my own herbs to harvest after I have used up the bought ones.  Hops are traditionally used in herb pillows but are to be used in moderation if one suffers from depression.  I decided to leave them out of my herbal mix altogether and will use rose petals instead.  Who would not want to fall into slumber and pleasant dreams with the intoxicating scent of a rose garden?

Before I leave, the answer to my question on the last post was *approximately 3 metres* so well done to Marigold Jam who was spot on!

*Update*  I have tried this bread and I don't think I will be using the same recipe again!  The bread was doughy and the outside very tough, breaking up as I was slicing it.  The flavour wasn't too great either!   I will try bread making again using another recipe.

  4. Loaf looks good to me and will taste the same whether you have damaged it getting it out of the tin or not. One of the reasons why I tend to make bloomers/cottage loaves or what have you baked on a flat tray as then this problem doesn't arise! Fancy me being correct! I have done some macrame so know it takes up loads of cord.

  5. From your photo it looks like a lovely loaf but I can see from your update that it didn't taste as good as you'd hoped it would. You will find that perfect recipe - keep baking:)

  6. Happy 2014, Simone! I am excited for all of the things you want to try this year. Some of your things are things that I want to do as well! Soapmaking. Lino cuts (I have had my kit for a long time and haven't tried it yet). Planting an herb garden (lots of gardening, really... the new yard has almost nothing in it).

  8. My husband used to bake bread when we were dating and the aroma was so wonderful! I'm sure you'll find a good recipe soon, Simone. And I can just imagine how lovely your herb pillows will be! You must keep us updated on those!xx

  9. There'e nothing like the smell and taste of a homemade loaf of bread. I always line my tin with baking paper to prevent the dough from sticking to the tin and you can reuse the same piece of baking paper several times before you need to replace it.

  10. You loaf looks delicious but it's a pity you were not happy with the taste or texture. Keep trying! I've had a breadmaker for a few years but the bread turned out such an unsatisfying shape. Now I've got a new mixer for Christmas and will be trying that for making bread.
