Coventry Cathedral Ruins

I had a short stop in the city of Coventry yesterday.  There was so much to see and do yet the heavy rain put the kibosh on taking many good photos.  I have tried to portray some of the internal remains of the cathedral. Despite the weather I found it a beautiful place to be and felt a great sense of peace. You can read all about the history here.

*''The majority of the great ruined churches and cathedrals of England are the outcome of the violence of the dissolution in 1539. The ruins of St Michael’s are the consequence of violence in our own time. On the night of 14 November 1940, the city of Coventry was devastated by bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. The Cathedral burned with the city, having been hit by several incendiary devices.''

  3. It's a wonderfully atmospheric place isn't it? I remember being taken to see the new cathedral when I was a young teenager by an uncle who lived there, but it's the old one that draws you in. My mother was in Leicester during the war and I remember she once told me how they were awake all night as they could hear the bombs falling on nearby Coventry:)

  4. I've long admired your country for retaining its historic buildings despite their condition. In America that lovely old shell would have been removed. As it is, it has such power.
And I think perhaps the strength of the ruin is intensified by the wet weather.
    Thank you, Simone.

  5. Gosh, it's been many a year since I went to Coventry Cathedral ...... it was a primary school trip, so a very long time! I mostly remember the beautiful tapestry in the 'new' Cathedral!

  7. I am always so impressed by the beautiful, historic buildings found all over Europe. When I have traveled to England, I have been in awe of the ruins of very old historic sites. Thanks for sharing! xx

  8. I visited this amazing place when I spent a trimester studying in London in 1977! I'll never forget the ghosts I felt as we wandered around the place. xo
