The Future Self That Never Was

I am feeling a little melancholic.  For many years I had a dream of having my own business by making and selling handmade items.  The problem here was not knowing what to make and how much time to invest in trying out suitable crafts.  The advent of the Shopping Telly Craft Channels back in the early 1990's made it all seem so simple.  Whenever they had guests on the show the presenter would ask 'What is your Angel policy?  Can the viewers buy the product to make and sell?'  'Yes, tell 'em to fill their boots' was a response I heard frequently.  Card making was one of the first lot of crafts touted and then they went across the board showcasing all different types of craft and machines to help your work be of a professional standard.  They even sold the cellophane bags to present your cards in to sell.

Card stock, paper, glues, cutting machines, die cutting machines, card making kits, punchcraft, pergamano, felt kits, jewellery making supplies, rubber stamps, heat guns, embossing powders, stamping platforms, inks, bookbinding, etc, etc.  I bought them all (almost) and did it all.

Storage was the next big thing on the shopping telly.  Now we had all these supplies we needed storage boxes, tote bags and places to store all these items.  I even bought a shopping trolley to store items 'on the go.'  I took over the spare room and filled it with 'Really Useful Boxes' to keep my 'stock'.  They piled up to the ceiling.

An unrealistic dreamer I convinced myself that by buying all this stock I was sitting on a future investment.  I stupidly failed to realise that these people want to sell a product.  That is all.  One of the champions of selling craft products to the public via the Shopping Channel is Sara Davies of Crafter's Companion.  She is an extremely ambitious and intelligent woman who saw the profit to be made in convincing middle aged women like me that they could turn their hobbies into profit by using her tools and kits and selling the end product.  She is now on the panel of Dragon's Den.

The reality of making to sell is that if something is easy to make then it is accessible to most peoples skill set.  If I can make a decent end product from having the right equipment so can thousands of others.  There is no profit to be made from making and selling unless what you sell is original and there is a market for it.  Many years ago I read that if you want to go into business make sure you are offering a service and not a product.  I think they mean 'end' product because there is lots to be made in kits and raw supplies.

It has taken over 3 decades to accumulate so many craft materials.  I never really enjoyed making craft products because the joy was thwarted through guilt in how much I had spent.  I am tearful as I dismantle the 'craft room'.  A dream being dismantled before my eyes.  I feel crushed as I sell off that which I had built.  There is no point in hanging onto a pipe dream.

Painting Paper

I've wasted an awful lot of January so far.  When I finally have time for 'creativity' I am either too tired or not in the mood.  I got up at 6.30 this morning and it took until 10.00am  before I could finally set aside time to paint some papers for a project I want to do.   I spent about one hour on this from preparation to clear up and then the guilt set in.  I have a pile of ironing yet to do and I never catch up with household chores.  Nothing ever seems to get completed.  I am frustrated to say the least.

Anyway.  I will continue to set aside time for 'wasteful' activities because I need time away from the monotonous and mundane life I am currently living.  I need to experiment and practise with different paints and paper if I am ever to progress in the field of art and craft.  I will find a way to slot it into my daily activities and just accept that I am going to feel guilty.

Cas Card Three

This is the final CAS (Clean and Simple) card I will be showing for now.  It may be clean but it was far from simple!  The bird cage die was difficult to cut out using my die cutting machine and took many attempts of finding a card stock that would cut crisply so that all the detail could be popped out.

Here is a close up.  I left the middle section of the cage in as I didn't want to spoil another one by tearing it!

Cards by Candlelight

Not quite candlelight but I have been working under a lamplight!  It gets dark quickly now and daylight hours are short.  I made this card at my newly tidied craft space.  Night fell before I could photograph it so I am putting up this picture now and then may put up another one when I am able to take a picture in natural daylight.

It is such a pleasure for me to work in such a tidy space.  I know some people prefer to work in chaos  but I really don't!  Making this type of card is meditative for me.  I get totally immersed in creating the embellishments, coming up with a pleasing arrangement and putting it all together.

Handmade Book

A lot of hand made went into this book; from the waxed covers and hand stitching....

..... to the tea dyed, baked and torn pages.

It's my first book so I experimented with just a few pages (I need to tea dye more!) and the book folds flat.  I would really like it to be jam packed with pages - a bumper volume!

I love the look and the feel of the pages.

Here's a close up of the front cover.  It has a slight smell of beeswax.  I am happy with the outcome but it took a lot of trial and error to get thus far!

Waxed Papers

Got some amazing effects waxing hand made paper today.  The papers have taken on a leathery texture and feel so expensive!  I have got a fun project in store for these.

Festive Decorations

I've taken on board the comments left for me as to what to make for the craft fair.  I've been watching lots of YouTube tutorials to hone my skills and was delighted to find a video which explains how to make these gorgeous hanging decorations.

They are wonderfully tactile and would be great to send through the post as they are fairly flat (apart from the embellished bit of course.)

This blue one has a fabric embellishment whereas the other two have metal connectors added for dimension.

Do you have a favourite?

You can find the YouTube video I followed here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR1-b2anUXY&list=LLe5T7S5IABkPm2xiuAPiDTw&index=34

Oven Baked Glass Marble Pendants

I really did bake these marbles in the oven.  My son thought I had lost the plot!  I think they are really pretty and catch the light beautifully.

A Bag of Tags

Newer blog readers may not know that I used to feature paper 'tags' on my blog quite a lot. I used to draw them and cut them out by hand - a time consuming but enjoyable task. I recently rediscovered my tags tucked away in a drawer and I have now re quenched my thirst for making them again.

I think I may take some packs along to the craft fair to add a bit of interest to the table.  Do you think bags of mixed tags would be preferable or themed packs such as cats and dogs or toads and wellies?  If you were buying what tags would you want in your pack?

Pimping up Pine Cones

It is a great time for picking up fallen pine cones in the UK.  I picked up a few handfuls at Capel Manor last week that had fallen from a giant Scots pine tree.

Unadorned the pine cones were lovely but I wanted to add a little extra to them .  I melted down some old candles that were too short to use and some wax that was left in the bottom of tea lights.  I did this in a heatproof bowl over some simmering water until just melted.  I then removed any wicks from the melted wax.  I had prepared a tray to use and had a packet of glitter to hand.  I carefully dipped the cones, pointy end down into the wax, placed them upright on the tray and sprinkled with glitter.  I did this for each cone and then left them until the wax had hardened.

I now have some very pretty bowl fillers (ssshh - for C*******s).  I guess you can hang them in garlands or as hanging decorations but you would have to keep them away from heat in case the wax started melting.

Don't forget to collect pine cones as soon as possible - everything is so early this year!  If you plan ahead you will have the materials you need for your festive projects!

Autumn in Summer

Yes I know that we are in the heart of summer but I am in autumn mode as I complete projects for the September craft fair.  Today I kept out of the sun and spent the whole day making this paper wreath!  Hopefully I will get quicker as my skills develop.  It really is very pretty as I gave it a fine mist of mica powder to enhance the golden hues of the autumn.

My jam gift tags are much more practical but hopefully the wreaths will draw people to the stall.
